Personal Papers Collections
The Law Library's Personal Papers Collections include the papers of distinguished attorneys including UB Law graduate Herald Price Fahringer, John Lord O'Brian, former UB Law dean Philip Halpern, and UB Law graduate and former professor Howard Berman.
John Lord O'Brian Collection
The papers of John Lord O'Brian, a distinguished lawyer and prominent public servant for whom the law school building is named, are housed in the Law Library Archives. Chronicling O'Brian's long and productive life from 1874 to 1973, the papers span the years of his legal career and public service activities. The papers include legal memoranda, opinion letters, personal notes, personal correspondence, published articles, photographs, honorary medals and other memorabilia. They are organized according to some of the major activities in which O'Brian was involved.Howard R. Berman Collection
The personal papers of Howard R. Berman provide a summary view of his life's work. The papers include research materials on human rights in general, the sources and development of aboriginal rights of Indian nations within North America and their modern applications with regard to the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations, Iroquois Confederacy), indigenous peoples from around the world, and the international forums that address rights of minorities and indigenous populations, i.e., the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN).
Herald Price Fahringer Papers
The collection consists of Mr. Herald Price Fahringer’s case documents, publications, and personal materials from 1951-2015. The collection also includes Mr. Fahringer's plaques and awards. The materials in this collection were collected, created, and used by Mr. Herald Price Fahringer. These materials were donated to the Charles B. Sears Law Library at the University at Buffalo after his death in 2015.
Philip Halpern Papers
The papers of Philip Halpern relate primarily to his civic duties as an advisor to the United States Delegation to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and as a member of the United Nations Sub-commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities with interspersed personal correspondence pertinent to his private life as lawyer, parent, and friend. Also included are many speeches made at various presentations as well as a collection of diverse pamphlets, leaflets, and memorandums.
