Rush Items

Levels of priority handling have been established and apply similarly to the cataloging, inputting, end-processing, and linking processes.

Note: Multiple copies should always be kept together and receive a flag of the color with the highest priority.
  1. First priority items (pink flag)

    1. Reserve
    2. "In Process"*
    3. Reference Desk
    4. Loose-leaf Room
    5. N.Y. Alcove
    6. Any item designated as RUSH for other reasons
    * "In Process" items are already received, but now have been requested by a patron. "Hold & notify" items are designated as such when item is ordered, thus some delay is expected.
  2. Second priority items (goldenrod flag)

    1. Mercury items
    2. Hold & notify*
    3. Items returned from patron review
    4. Any special locations not noted in first priority (Includes: Reference, Koren, Faculty, Acquisitions, Cataloging, Archives)
  3. Berman (Blue flag)

  4. Third priority items (no flag)

  5. This additional category applies at cataloging stage. Certain items will be handled next after first and second priority, due to their content or format. Primary legal material (codes, statutes, regulations, etc.) and material receiving updates, such as loose-leaf binders and titles receiving supplementation in other forms (pocket parts, supplements) are examples.
These items will be identified by Head of Cataloging and assigned to an appropriate staff member for cataloging.
  6. Special formats

    1. Microform
    2. CD-ROMs
    3. AV
    4. Others, as identified
This category also applies at cataloging stage, typically because end- processing is not required. The Head of Cataloging will assign cataloging of such items.

    Points to remember:

    • Catalog priority items before regular assignments.
    • Write "Rush" on statistics slip for first and second priority items.
    • Write call number on request form.
    • Be sure to place item in end-processing area so as to ensure priority inputting. If colored flag in item, be sure it is visible.
    • If item includes update to be filed or special handling by Circulation staff, place green flag in item also.
    • Items go directly to end-processing or bindery shelf.
    • If needed, add the tape color for special locations to the flag (Orange for Ref. Desk, Yellow for Reserve, etc.).
    • Rush items do not go to bindery.

"Needed Immediately" Items

  1. Link item
  2. Set coding on Holdings screen to 1U
  3. Add note to Holdings screen and to Item Record as follows:
Send to Cat. Dept. for cataloging/processing--[operator's initials;month/year]
  4. Set Catalog Review flag in item record
