Physical Handling

  1. Commercial Bindery
    Soft bound materials with no rush priority are sent to the commercial bindery. (Exceptions noted in Section IV.)
    1. The holdings screen is printed with the author, title, edition, and call number highlighted in place of a flag.
    2. Highlight DNC if in notes field.
    3. Add note (A.L.) to printout to indicate item should be added to New Acquisitions List if applicable.
    4. For multiple volumes, add note:
      Bind [no. of vols.] individually
    5. Place on bindery shelf.
  2. Pambind
    Materials, regardless of priority, that are folded and stapled through the center, are sewn into a set of pressboard covers.
    1. Rushes and Repairs only
      1. Write PAMBIND on the flag above call number
      2. Add DNC or tape color if applicable
      3. Place on Pambind shelf in End Processing area
    2. All other pambinds
      1. Write call number on Damaged Book flag
      2. Add DNC or tape color if applicable
      3. Link item, placing barcode on damaged book flag
      4. Give to Janet to send to Preservation
  3. Velobind
    Materials, regardless of priority, made up of loose pages, are machine-bound.
    1. Write VELOBIND on the flag above call number.
    2. Add DNC or tape color if applicable.
    3. Place on Velobind shelf in End Processing area.
  4. End Process as Received
    All state document serials that cannot be pambound or velobound (except New York State), soft bound supplements, soft bound primary materials, soft bound rush items, and PLIs.
  5. Brittle Books
    Brittle pieces placed in special Preservation enclosures should have a barcode inside the book itself AND should have written under barcode "plus wrapper".
