Internet Resources
Internet resources are cataloged directly from the Internet. The Senior Acquisitions Clerk will add record to BISON (either from OCLC or create a brief) for these items. There is no physical backlog for Internet resources, so notice of requested resource will be given directly to Cataloging by Acquisitions.
For All Titles
- Delete any 530 field.
- Add a 538 field formatted as follows:
- Mode of access for websites is always "Internet"
- No period at the end of the 856 field.
- If you are editing a record that already contains an 856 field, make sure you remove subfield 2 "|2 http" or any subfield z "|z Adobe Acrobat reader required"
538: : Mode of access: Internet.
Internet Resource Alone
- Activate Copy 1 in the HLDG screen formatted as follows:
- For monographs:
- For serials:
- For periodicals:
- On Bib screen, add 856 field formatted as follows:
1U |a ll,in |b No call number
2U |a ll,in |b No call number
2T |a ll,in |b Electronic journal
856:40 : |u http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/njrp92.pdfCount on stat slip as 1T (1 title) only; neither volumes nor call numbers are noted.
Internet Resource with Printout as Added Copy
This section pertains to monograph and serial titles that have a printout as an added copy to an Internet resource record.
The preferred method is to catalog the resource alone and not to create added copies for printouts. However, printouts may be added per Law Library Collection Development Policy, per request. Printouts to accompany Internet resources are provided by Acquisitions or Reference.
- No mention of printout is made in the bibliographic record. Cataloging is done for the Internet resource only.
- On Bib screen, add 856 field formatted as follows:
- Copy 1 on holdings record reflects the Internet resource.
- For monographs:
- For serials:
- For periodicals:
- Activate Copy 2 for the printout, using correct Copy status code, and location and circulation status codes.
- The printout should be labelled copy 1 (1) for end processing, and this status should be noted in holdings.
- Count on stat slip as 1T, 1V (or as appropriate), with call number assigned to printout noted.

Internet Site As Added Copy
This section pertains to monograph and serial titles that have an Internet site as an added copy on a print record. Should also be followed for government documents titles.
- Government documents examples: ECW2511 and ECZ6837.
For a government document on the Internet, make sure you find the URL for the entire document. Government sites will often display a document in one or more of the following formats: Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, ASCII text format, and HTML format. We want to add all available URLs. To distinguish between the different formats you will need to add a |z to the beginning of the 856:
856:41 : |z ASCII version: |u http://www.ncjrs.org/txtfiles/163061.txt
856:41 : |z PDF version: |u http://www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles/163061.pdf
856:41 : |z HTML version: |u http://www.ncjrs.org/163061.html
- If there is only one URL in the record there is no need to add the |z version note.
- PURLs: You may find a record that has two URLs, one that looks "normal" such as: http://www.flra.gov/23.html and one that is a PURL (Permanent Uniform Resource Locator) such as:
- The Cataloging Department maintains a list of government sites to search for documents available on the Internet:
- Also try the home page of the publishing agency.
- Continue with steps below for all titles.
- Activate Copy 2 (or the next available copy) in the HLDG screen formatted as follows:
- For monographs:
- For serials:
- For periodicals:
- Create MHLD on activated copy for serials and periodicals as follows:
http://purl.access.gpo.gov/GPO/LPS1475
Keep both URLs, but don’t add a |z to either since both URLS should take you to the same document, not two different versions of it. Example at EDM6743.

- For Acquisitions staff only: When you have completed the above procedure, send print monographs or serials through for cataloging as usual.
- For titles that are available ONLY on the Internet, follow instructions in Coding Material on BISON for Backlog procedure, IA3.
- Statistics slip reflects print copy only. Internet resources are counted on Monthly Desk Statistics sheet.
