Does Not Circulate (DNC)


  1. The following locations and collections are designated as DNC:
    • Ref.
    • Ref. Desk
    • Acquisitions dept.
    • Cataloging dept.
    • Interlibrary loan (ILL)
    • Office copy
    • Special collections (Archives, Berman, Haas, O'Brian)
    • NY Superseded
    • NY Alcove
    • NY Core
    • Fed. Core
    • Koren Micro
    • Koren Ref.
  2. In addition, these categories are designated as DNC:
    • Loose-leaf services
    • Loose-leaf titles with multiple volumes
    • Statutes
    • Codes
    • Code commentaries
    • Administrative regulations,
    • Court and administrative reports,
    • Legislative documents, including bills and administrative documents
  3. And any title designated as such by a reference librarian or the Head of Circulation.
  4. Once DNC status has been determined:
    1. In Aleph catalog:
      1. Collection = NS in 852 subfield c
      2. Add subfield x to 852 field with note as follows:
        [DNC (Initials,Month/Year)]
    2. Item record(s):
      1. Item Status = 02
    3. Check Aleph Acquisitions open order record:
      1. If open, check to make sure it says DNC after call number in Library Note field; if not, ask Acquisitions Assistant to add.
      2. No action necessary if order record is closed.
    4. On flag:
      1. Check DNC option on flag or write DNC on flag below call number for reclass items
