ARL Statistics: SERIALS Currently Received: LAW

ARL needs:

purchased

  • electronic (this is online)
  • print and other formats (this is everything other than online)

not purchased

  • consortial (no known titles received by this method)
  • freely accessible (freely accessible in print or on the web)
  • exchanges
  • gifts (received from an individual or organization, not freely accessible)
  • government documents (received on depository)
Current instruction from ARL is to count unique titles, irrespective of number subscriptions or different formats.

What we will do to get the information for 08/09 and subsequent years

We will use Serials Solutions title counts and the newly-established SER field in bib records to gather the information for ARL and for possible internal use. The SER field will be indexed enabling anyone to retrieve and review information in the GUI or the OPAC. All SER fields need to be added by June 30, 2009.

For Law the SER fields should contain four subfields.

|a For type of serial, use:

  • Periodical
  • Serial
  • MC (MC=monographic continuation including series)
  • Looseleaf (For Law's use only)
  • Update/Law (For Law's use only)

|b For method of acquisition, use:

  • Purchase
  • Depository
  • Free (freely accessible in print or on the web)
  • Gift (received from an individual or organization, not freely accessible)

|c For format, use:

  • Print (paper, microform, CD-ROM, DVD; any format other than online)
  • Electronic (online)

|d Law

When a title is received currently in print and electronic, ARL wants it counted as electronic. Construct SER fields as follows:

Print and electronic are linked to the same bibliographic record

  • |a [periodical, serial, or mc]
  • |b [purchase, free, gift, or depository]
  • |c electronic and print
  • |d Law

Print and electronic are linked to separate bibliographic records

On record for electronic:
  • |a [periodical, serial, or mc]
  • |b [purchase, free, gift, or depository]
  • |c electronic and print
  • |d Law
On record for print:
  • |a [periodical, serial, or mc]
  • |b [purchase, free, gift, or depository
  • |c counted as electronic
  • |d Law
