- Art in the Law Library
Le Mouvement du Carnival (1962)
Le Mouvement du Carnival, a series of seven oil panels by Dorothy Shea (1924-63), hangs above the Law Library's central staircase. Dorothy Shea was an active force in the arts in Western New York and was an instructor in art at the University, the Albright Art School, and Canisius College. Ruth Berger Cohen placed this work on permanent loan with the University in 1989.
Works by Dorothy Shea in the University's permanent collection include Unititled Brown Study #1, which hangs in the main corridor of Baldy Hall, and Bridge Series #33, Structure 1962-63. These also are gifts of Ruth Berger Cohen.
John Lord O'Brian
A portrait of John Lord O'Brian hangs in the elevator lobby of the Law Library's main floor. The portrait was painted by Virginia Cuthbert (b. 1908). It was presented to the University on April 8, 1973 on the occasion of the formal dedication of John Lord O'Brian Hall. Presenters were Manly Fleischmann, U.B. Law School Class of 1933 and Trustee of the State University of New York, and Mrs. Kellogg Mann, the eldest daughter of Mr. O'Brian.
Summertime [mural] by Walter Prochownik is a nine-panel oil on canvas completed in August, 1988. It was donated to the University at Buffalo Foundation by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, which commissioned the work from the artist. Its dimensions are 8 x 38 feet.
